Gathering necessary supplies like clothing and diapers is a major concern for many parents. And in these tough economic times, this has become a dire need for some.
Know that you deserve the support needed to be an excellent parent. And if you’re struggling financially or don’t have adequate support, there’s no shame in asking for help. In fact, it demonstrates you’re a good parent who wants the best for your child.
Parenting Necessities
Nowadays, many books and websites advertise a multitude of baby items you’ll need. But are all of them necessary?
While it is fun to purchase cute outfits and have many toys on hand, babies are happiest when they are loved and cared for properly. They don’t need the latest styles and toys. Instead, safety and value are paramount.
Baby essentials include the following:
- Newborn/infant clothing (babies grow quickly, so clothes seemingly become too small overnight!)
- Age-appropriate and safe toys to stimulate development
- Crib or bassinet (a flat, firm mattress and tightly fitting sheet should be the only items in this space)
- Changing table
- Diapers
- Diaper cream
- Wipes
- Infant bathtub
- Baby shampoo and body wash
- Baby towels (hooded towels can help safeguard your baby from cold air)
- Soft washcloths
- Baby bottles
- Formula (if necessary)
- Breast pump, milk storage bag, nipple cream (if you breastfeed)
- High chair
- Baby food (if applicable)
- Bibs
- Burp cloths
- Pediatrician-approved medicines
- Baby nail clippers
- Pacifiers (optional)
- Baby toothbrush and toothpaste (when applicable)
- Infant car seat (this should be new and pass safety guidelines)
- Stroller
While this isn’t an exhaustive list, it provides an idea of the items you’ll need. With the exception of cribs, car seats, and items like diapers, you can find many needed supplies at second-hand stores. Family members and friends may have the supplies you need to get started.
