Why Do I Need An Ultrasound?

An ultrasound is a diagnostic tool providers use to identify various health conditions and examine certain bodily structures. A wand-like device called a transducer is applied to the body part being examined, and soundwaves form an image on a screen.

An obstetric ultrasound provides an in-depth look at the female reproductive system and assesses the pregnancy’s health. Abdominal ultrasounds are noninvasive, while transvaginal ultrasounds, which involve a transducer being gently inserted into the vagina, are invasive.

Before An Abortion

An ultrasound supplies the details you need to protect your health:

• Viability: Up to 26% of all pregnancies end in miscarriage. If you’ve had a miscarriage, abortion isn’t an option, and you may need further treatment. An ultrasound determines whether your pregnancy is viable (progressing normally and has a heartbeat).
• Gestational age: Your pregnancy’s gestational age, or how far along you are, can help determine your options.
• Location: Knowing your pregnancy’s location is crucial. Some women experience a condition called ectopic pregnancy, which occurs when the fertilized egg implants in a location outside the uterus such as a fallopian tube. This condition is dangerous and requires immediate medical treatment. Abortion isn’t an option or treatment for an ectopic pregnancy.
