The Decision Is Up to You
While it’s natural for your partner to have strong feelings and opinions about the pregnancy, he should never pressure or force you into making a decision.
Creating some space while you sort through your own thoughts and feelings can be incredibly important. Ask yourself, “What do I want?” A pregnancy decision can have long-lasting emotional and physical effects, so it’s not something you should feel rushed into making.
Although every woman’s experience is different, some research has revealed that women who feel pressured into having an abortion may be more likely to experience emotional distress afterward, including symptoms of anxiety and depression.
It’s important to make your decision based on what you feel is best for you, not because someone else is pressuring you.
Protect Your Safety
If your partner makes you feel unsafe through threats, intimidation, or controlling behavior, and you feel unsafe, reach out to the National Domestic Violence Hotline immediately.
Signs of an unhealthy or abusive relationship may include isolating you from friends and family, threatening to harm you, controlling your finances, or making you feel guilty.
Understand All Your Options
Taking time to slow down and learn about all your options can help you make a confident, informed decision. Your three options include parenting, adoption, and abortion.
It’s important to understand how abortion works and the risks involved. Parenting support is also available if you want to continue your pregnancy but are in school, feeling overwhelmed, or struggling financially.
We offer classes on prenatal care and parenting, as well as fatherhood and couples mentoring. We also have an Earn While You Learn program. For every class you complete, you’ll earn points that can be redeemed for items such as diapers, wipes, and infant clothing.
We also offer community referrals if you need additional resources or help with rent, food, and medical care.
Adoption is another option to consider if you want to continue your pregnancy but are not in a position to parent. We can discuss the different types of adoption plans and which may work best for you.
Get an Ultrasound to Confirm Your Pregnancy
Before making any pregnancy decision, the next step is confirming your pregnancy with an ultrasound. An ultrasound can help determine:
- Whether your pregnancy is located inside the uterus.
- Whether your pregnancy is progressing.
- How far along your pregnancy is.
This information is important because it can affect your available options and help identify certain medical conditions, such as an ectopic pregnancy, which requires immediate medical treatment.
